Choosing a boat cleaner or detailer

Updated 9 August 2026

Marine surfaces are unforgiving: the wrong products strip wax and antifoul, and detergent-laden wash-water in a marina is an environmental fine waiting to happen.

What to check

Ask what products they use on gelcoat and antifoul, and how they contain and dispose of wash-water — a professional works to the marina's environmental rules. Confirm they handle what you need: hull, topsides, canvas and clears, and interior vinyl and mould. For bigger jobs (cut-and-polish, ceramic coating) ask to see previous work, and check they're insured to work on your vessel in the pen or on the hardstand.

Common questions

How often should I detail my boat?

A wash after each trip and a polish or wax every few months keeps gelcoat protected. Trailer boats can be done at home, marina-berthed boats on site.

Can they treat vinyl mould?

Yes — ask specifically for marine vinyl and canvas mould treatment, and whether it includes a protectant to slow it coming back.
