Choosing a car detailer

Updated 9 August 2026

The difference between a wash and a detail is technique — done wrong, a cheap wash puts swirl marks into your paint that cost more to correct than the wash saved.

What separates a real detailer

Ask how they wash — a two-bucket method or a rinseless/foam process, never one dirty bucket and a sponge. For paint correction, ask about machine-polishing stages and whether they measure paint thickness. Confirm exactly what's included: interior shampoo, engine bay, wheels and arches, and any coating (wax, sealant or ceramic) with how long it lasts. Mobile detailers should bring their own water and power.

Common questions

What's the difference between a wash and a detail?

A wash cleans the surface; a detail decontaminates and corrects it — clay bar, polish and protection inside and out. Expect hours, not minutes.

Is ceramic coating worth it?

For a car you'll keep, a well-applied ceramic coating protects paint for years and makes washing easier. Ask about prep and warranty — the prep is where quality shows.
