Choosing a gutter cleaning service
Updated 9 August 2026
Gutter cleaning is a working-at-heights job, so two things matter most: that they do it safely, and that they actually clear the downpipes — not just skim the visible leaves.
What to check
Confirm they're insured for work at heights and how they access the roof (ladder or harness). Ask whether they bag and remove debris or leave it, and whether they flush and check downpipes for blockages — a cleared gutter with a blocked downpipe still overflows. Before-and-after photos from the roof are the easy proof the job was done, and in bushfire-prone areas ask about ember-guard gutter mesh.
Common questions
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Once or twice a year for most homes, more with overhanging trees or before bushfire season. Blocked gutters cause overflow, rot and fire risk.
Do they clear downpipes too?
They should — ask them to confirm downpipes flow freely, not just that the gutter looks clear.
