Choosing a roof and solar panel cleaner
Updated 9 August 2026
Roofs and solar panels are the trade where the wrong method costs the most — high pressure cracks tiles and voids solar warranties, and it's all happening at height.
What to check
Ask specifically about method: soft washing for roofs, and low-pressure or deionised-water cleaning for panels, which manufacturers require to keep the warranty valid. Confirm they're insured for work at heights and how they access safely. For solar, ask whether they check for shading, damage or lifting panels while up there — and be wary of anyone proposing to blast panels with high pressure or harsh chemicals.
Common questions
Will cleaning void my solar warranty?
Only if done wrong. Most manufacturers require gentle, low-pressure or deionised-water cleaning — confirm the operator uses it.
Does cleaning panels actually help?
Dust, bird droppings and pollen measurably cut output, especially on low-tilt panels. A clean typically restores lost generation.
