Choosing an upholstery cleaner
Updated 9 August 2026
The first thing a good upholstery cleaner does is check the fabric code (W, S, WS or X). Get that wrong and a wash can shrink, watermark or ruin the piece.
What to check
Ask how they identify the fabric and match the method — water-based extraction for W and WS fabrics, solvent (dry) cleaning for S, vacuum-only for X. For pet or spill odours, ask specifically for enzyme treatment, which removes the source rather than masking it. Confirm drying times, whether they also do mattresses and dining chairs, and that they'll spot-test a hidden area first. Delicate or antique pieces deserve a specialist.
Common questions
Will cleaning shrink or mark my lounge?
Not if the method matches the fabric code — which is exactly why a professional checks W/S/WS/X before choosing water or solvent cleaning.
Can they remove pet smells?
Ask for enzyme treatment, which breaks down the odour source. A standard clean only masks it, so the smell returns.
