Choosing a pet sitter
Updated 5 August 2026
First decide where your dog will be happiest: their own home with a visiting or live-in sitter, or the sitter's home as a guest. Routine-driven and territorial dogs usually do better at home; social dogs often love a host family.
Vetting a sitter
For the sitter's home: ask about fencing, other pets and children, and where your dog sleeps. For your home: police check, references, and exactly how many visits (or whether they sleep over). Either way, insist on a meet and greet, confirm medication experience if needed, and agree on update frequency — daily photos are standard now, not a luxury. Leave written vet details and authority to act in an emergency.
Common questions
What if my dog needs medication?
Ask directly about experience with your medication type, and do a supervised practice run at the meet and greet.
